BH3, Inc. works with children and their families to address behavioral concerns using evidence-based Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) procedures that prioritize assent, autonomy, and emotional well-being.

Assent-Based ABA

Therapy is conducted based on a model of assent which means choice and autonomy are maximized during sessions. Assent refers to the expression of desire and willingness by clients to participate in therapeutic practices. Withdrawal of assent includes any escape or avoidance behaviors. Assent is prioritized during therapy sessions by measuring the client’s approach behaviors, frequently assessing their preference for therapeutic activities, teaching safe withdrawal of assent, and immediately stopping an activity when clients withdraw their assent. While this approach may lengthen the time it takes to acquire skills, it is prioritized to ensure the client’s well-being by promoting autonomy and self-advocacy. Staff will seek assent before making physical contact unless the client’s immediate well-being is in jeopardy. In that case, the client’s safety will be prioritized over their right to autonomy
