While behavior analysts are trained to analyze behavior through the environment, we often fall victim to the fundamental attribution error (FAE). This error suggest that we attribute the cause of our own behavior to the environment while attributing the cause of other’s behavior to internal states. This presentation will discuss how the FAE effects members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Additionally, the presentation will reframe common failings of the FAE through an environmental analysis of respondent and operant conditioning and derived relational responding.

Learning Objectives for Participants:

  • Participants will be able to define the fundamental attribution error.
  • Participants will identify and discuss personal examples of the fundamental attribution error.
  • Participants will be able to identify how the fundamental attribution error influences current biases, behaviors and systems impacting the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • Participants will be able to discuss the LGBTQIA+ experience in the context of respondent and operant conditioning and derived relational responding.
